January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. At Clay Eye, we are fortunate to have our very own Dr. David Hayes, A Specialty Trained Glaucoma Surgeon on our team.
Facts About Glaucoma:
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness
More than 2.2 million Americans age 40 and older suffer from glaucoma. Sadly, nearly half do not even know they have the disease—as it causes no early symptoms. Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated, and approximately 10% of people with glaucoma who receive proper treatment still experience vision loss.
There is no cure for Glaucoma
Currently, glaucoma is not a curable disease, however it is treatable. With medication and/or surgery, it is possible to slow the progression of the disease.
Dr. Hayes is a strong proponent of annual eye exams. “Glaucoma is a unique disease as it is the leading cause of preventable blindness, and is often called “the sneak thief of sight” since there are typically no symptoms. In the vast majority of people, no pain is usually associated with glaucoma which makes it difficult to detect until substantial vision loss has occurred. Also, you may experience vision loss in one eye more than the other and may therefore be unaware that you are slowly losing vision as your eyes will compensate for one another. Early detection is critical, so an annual eye exam is key.”
